The Evil God

Note: You’ll probably ask, what’s * or ** or even *** (not censoring bad words)? Look in the footnotes, and you will see…Also, if you see that anything seems wrong, just tell me and I’ll try to fix it! Be it a grammar mistake, wrong translation assumption, something is too rigid…

I like observing.

In a classroom, I like sitting in the back seats. Because there, everyone can be observed.

It’s like watching a battle of a certain simulation game in a computer, where the aim is world unification.

I even like watching much more than playing sports.

Also, I like watching S ○ X. Ahh, but I just wasn’t blessed enough that you might say I didn’t have the opportunity to do it.

Because just like that, I died in an accident and was called by God.

And perfect for an observation enthusiast like me, I given the chance to reincarnate.
ーThe Evil God

In an RPG, the last boss is a demon king. However, I am an existence which reigns over it. A.K.A. the hidden boss.

With overwhelming power that far surpasses a demon king, the power of the Evil God’s subordinates can exterminate the demon king’s forces within a day.

My role is to ambush the hero who defeated the demon king in the dark temple.

And until then, I have to wait while observing the world.

Truly, this is the ideal life for me.

With that in mind, I readily agreed to transmigrate without hesitation and was incarnated under the name, Ashtal.

And so, I observed the world while continuing to wait for the hero to defeat the demon king ーfor 1000 years.

Hey, isn’t this too late? 1000 years have passed, and yet no one is coming.

「Again, this story is of…」

An appalled old man.

While there are no life spans for wicked divine beings, I actually age. And moreover, I have a characteristic to be reborn in fixed periods.

Because the memory takes over in succession, I treat it as being the same person. Even so, no matter how you look at it, an old man is an old man ーーthough having the appearance of an ikemen (1) in mid 20s.

Immediately after I reach an old age, I am reincarnated and continue as a watchdog.

Thereafter, I continued this duty for 1000 years.

The Evil God’s appearance closely resembles that of a human being. However, there are small differences such as something like growing horns and fangs.

Though the biggest difference is that there are big, black wings. However, once it’s concealed, the appearance looks almost the same as an ordinary human.

But, that’s no longer possible to hide when the time comes that I have to bring my ability into play and fight near full strength.

As for my appearance, it is the same as from my previous life. I guess my eyes look slightly evil, though my face leans toward being average. (TLN: Ehhh, weren’t you an ikemen??)

And like my previous life, I have black eyes and raven-black hair. Some brown is mixed in, though.

10 years after I became the Evil God, the demon king was defeated for the first time. In the AS calendar, it would be 11 years.

At that time, I was nervously waiting for the hero’s party to come.

Although I won’t die due to a natural death, an existence will naturally disappear if killed.

So, my wait was filled with tension.
But they did not come.

No matter how many years I waited, a hero’s party did not come.

So, I ordered an investigation.

It seems that they didn’t even know about the existence of the secret boss who was waiting for them in the first place; after struggling to defeat the demon king, they refrained from continuing.

In the first place, the hero’s journey was meant to defeat the demon king.

That’s the basis of the story. It’s basically, go to the castle, defeat the demon king, take a farewell gift, and then leave.

Therefore, after defeating the demon king, there should be clear thinking. *

Well then, on the other hand, what about the Evil God? It seems like he wasn’t included in this story.

There’s a legend about a village located deeply in the mountains of a certain region. As it can be understood, this is is a quite a foreshadowing; and yet, everyone ignores it. **

Perhaps, you might not have even heard of the story.

This is about the castle that I that reside within ー the Dark Temple.

When a demon king is defeated, the entrance to the dungeon (2) appears.

And really quietly, I make my appearance. Therefore, no one notices.

When the demon king is defeated, a new one is reborn after a fixed period of time.

The time period may range from six months to several decades. Though, there were several times in which it was not born for more than 50 years.

And during those times, the dungeon was there in its place.

However, no one came.

Whatever the circumstances may be, this is too cruel. With that said, I secretly took a survey.

The question was 『Do you know of the existence called the Evil God?』

Answer: 2% knows. At first it may seem low, but since there are 1 million people out there, that means that 20,000 people knew.

So why is this happening? This was then re-examined.

It seems that most of the people who answered YES meant YES to the answer that they know of the word Evil God.
Hey, you will understand if you think about it for a bit, you know! If you know of the word 『Evil God』, how can you still inquire about it. **

The Evil God exists. Listen here, you have to know that!
Well anyhow, no matter how you look at it, there’s probably someone who noticed the Evil God in the past.

So, why isn’t anyone coming? I’d like to have a conversation. *

Although this isn’t necessary for the story. More like, an additional element.

Though isn’t defeating and weakening me a good thing? Yet, there’s no such thing. I won’t drop so easily. ***

Even if I can drop from existence, an opponent that can do that to me doesn’t exist.***

Therefore, I could be a test of strength for the considerably curious that come.

But for 1000 years, such a fellow did not appear.
If it was a game, then I could be a test of their strength; however, in this different world, it concerns life and death.

Even if I have no intention of killing, the other person would most likely assume that I will kill. **

「After much consideration, it seems like I’ll have to leave this place. 」

「Since, not understanding why and yet remaining this way is no good.」**

It seems that the voice of this old man’s heart has not been heard.*
「To begin with, God gave me the chance to reincarnate because of a condition, isn’t that right?」

As an old man, I just have to say that God suddenly attached some conditions at the time of the reincarnation.

The Evil God has to wait on the side for the hero to come, and defeating the hero is prohibited. Because if not, the story would become ruined, right? Well, that’s no wonder.

But I’m not allowed to even meet one person from the hero’s partyーI have to wait for them to come to my Dark Temple.

According to God, there’s great importance to this impact.

Since, the demon king’s castle can’t even compare to super-high difficulty of the Dark Temple dungeon.

The challenger needs to be capable enough to come into the innermost depths before we can confront each other. That’s when the duty of the Evil God starts.

So, I overwhelm the hero’s party and then send them away.

And at that time, the human race will know. That there exists a wicked existence that far surpasses the demon king. The Evil God.

And humanity will know of true terror.

Such is the direction God requested me to go towards.***

Though it will probably take a while until the first challenger comes. And because of the enormous amount of spare time, there’s no choice besides observing in the meantime.**

This order is only possibly if you’re an observation enthusiast.**

And that’s why 1000 years have passed for such a thing.

No matter how anyone puts it, isn’t 1000 years too long?

The demon king has already been beaten dozens of times. The hero has also been equally defeated.

Even now, the extermination of the demon king has been completed, and mankind is victorious over the world.*

Even if I say that it’s after the end, it’s different from a game as everything is not over.**

People’s lives will not end like a story.

It’s just not something you would particularly talk about.

The world where the demon king is defeated becomes peaceful.

And the people lived happily for a while. A happy ending.

This is troubling, don’t you think? As the one who observes.

The previous young demon king’s (3) cook was defeated after 1 year.

ーThat was the most boring time.

When the demon king disappears, that’s when human beings start wars among themselves.

It’s quite fun to watch it.

However, when the demon king is defeated, the human race doesn’t recklessly charge to war for one year.*

That sort of thing only happens when the demon king doesn’t come out for several decades.

Mankind has come to understand that the demon king has repeatedly appeared many times.*

So even if a country becomes peaceful, it will have to continue reinforcing its armament.

When the demon king slowly comes out, a country seeks its outlets from other countries.**

It’s during that present time that the world seems to unify, or something similar to the like.

But the demon king is defeated, so such a thing does not happen for one year too.

As expected, I was bored.

I can look at any possible place by using these wicked eyes’ Evil Eye, and magic.

And today too, I have decided to observe.

After such a long time, let’s see what’s the state of the hero is like.*

________________________________________________________________________________ Footnotes:

(1) ikemen – a good-looking guy

(2) dungeon – most likely referencing Ashtal’s Dark Temple

(3) young demon king – originally demon king-maru…so I googled around and found explanations like “circle,” “roundness,” “something precious,” male ending to a name,” etc…yeah, I wasn’t sure so I chose the third one (or tried to).

* – A mark that indicates that I struggled with the sentence quite a bit.

** – A mark that indicates I was seriously questioning how to MTL a sentence or the whole small paragraph.

*** – A mark that indicates that I truly had despair-like moments with this sentence or the whole small paragraph. Ugh, it was so hard to MTL, and I’m still not sure if it’s right in the end!

    Thanks for the chapter.
You may ask Rising the dead/awesome or Rebirth online world for a good machine translate tools I guess.

    • Oh? By slow, do you mean the slow story progression (well, it’s the first chapter, haha) or the upcoming slow update for ch. 2 (if only finals weren’t coming soon…) ?
Well, I’m glad you like it so far!

    • Oh? Hm, thanks for the suggestion, but I need to think about that one a bit more. Although ibiruai does literally means ‘evil eye,’ I’m worried the sentence will sound weird in English if it was “I can look at any possible place by using wicked eye, evil eye, and magic.” Eh, wicked eye and evil eye being right next to each other despite being the same thing kind of looks weird to me, but let me see…

      • Eh, thanks for your praise *blushes*. But, I don’t think I deserve being called with -sama yet. I believe such an address is for the experienced translators who have committed to TLing or MTLing for quite a while. While I’m still a newbie, I hope to earn the right to be addressed like that one day.

Still, thanks for your praise, hehe 🙂

    • Yeah, it was…I actually struggled more, but I didn’t want to decorate even more sentences with *. Well, the main reason I included * was in case anyone questioned that portion that I machine translated and wanted to double check. After all, those sentences with * are the ones I struggled on…
      Thanks for your encouragement!

  3. 俺はありとあらゆる場所を、この邪眼と魔法によって見ることができる。

邪眼 reads as yokoshima me(よこしまめ), which can mean evil eye or wicked eye… yet the author used the katagana イビルアイ(Ibiruai/Evil Eye) in the furigana. Never seen an author use it that way… But, I would say the authors intent was to name it Evil Eye since furigana is traditionally used to simplify kanji that the writer feels is not commonly known by the general public.

      • Well the author wrote it in the furigana… So it seems that probably is what he was intending. Japanese doesn’t have a phonetic sound for the word Evil, the way you think it would be. Furigana is small written notations in either hiragana or katakana for kanji that is not widely known. Most often Furigana is to write out the phonetic of the kanji how its read, most japanese once they know how said can kinda relate to an actual vocabulary word. Normally, you would write out yokoshima me and not ibiruai, because that is how you would read the phonetic kanji, just this time he decided to write ibiruai instead. There are ALOT of kanji to know and even most adults don’t know them average adult knows maybe 700 to 1k or so. There are easily over 5000 of them, and there are multiple readings of the same kanji as well as kanji that are written differently but still mean the same thing… 眼 is said “me” or eye or eyeball… 目 also is said “me” and ALSO means eye, its even used as one of the radicals in the other kanji.

There is no v in the japanese language or sound that is “exactly” like it, so they use closest sounding phonetic character which is bi or び/ビ.

Katakana is used to represent other languages in their writing or emphasis on a specific word in their own vocabulary. So Ibiru is Evil there is no L in japense so again they use the sound ru/る/ル which is the closest phonetic character to the letter L to give that sound. Ai well is the eye sound….

I feel like a understand a bit better now. Especially that part about the katakana! 🙂

for this part , the one he called ikemen was actually other you see.

Because the memory takes over in succession, I treat it as being the same person. Even so, no matter how you look at it, an old man is an old man ーーthough having the appearance of an ikemen (1) in mid 20s.

It was actually Ji ya is Ji ya <–grandpa ya
well if i'm not wrong though

    • Oh? Can you please clarify what you mean by him calling the other an ikemen? I thought it was strange how I translated one part that he called himself an ikemen Hidden Boss and yet call himself average when describing his appearance that’s supposedly the same from his previous life.

Also, thanks for the suggestion but I think I’ll keep it as “old man.” I rechecked the part that you commented about and found that half of the machine translations (that I use) translate it as old man, and the other half as grandpa. The deal breaker though was jisho dictionary and rikaikun, which translated it as old man/geezer. Thanks for your concern, though! 🙂

    • Hello! Thanks for your kind words!
Yes, I don’t want to crash (I forced myself to finish within a couple days) so I planned to space it out over a week…though that’s probably not possible for the next chapter because I have lab tests this week and finals next week! Ah~ if it was midterms, I can probably manage. But not finals…never for finals…

      • Haha, thanks. At the moment, I’m not good enough to be able to truly tell if a sentence is wrong (can’t read Japanese after all, so I’m heavily relying on machine translations and dictionaries). However, at the very least, I want my translations to be readable, so I agree with your ‘Quality over Quantity.’
Thanks for your encouragement! And it’s also a reminder that I should stop dilly-dallying and start right now, haha.

    • Haha, I don’t know, I kind of doubt it…I have yet to really MTL the next chapter in depth because…finals week start…in…two days….but, he did repeatedly mention that he is an old man (or at least in mindset, probably), so he should have more immunity against Worldly desires…probably, haha.
